May 20th, 2008I was bored waiting for class to start earlier tonight, and decided to play with my site. Lo and behold, I managed to get the image gallery updated and working correctly (a task I couldn't accomplish with the old layout, for some reason). I didn't have time to add any content to it, but it looks and functions exactly how I want it to. ...more than likely. I have yet to test it with Internet Explorer. It does work fine in Firefox 2 and Epiphany, however. I am very certain it will work fine in IE too.
Sooner or later I'll add some content to it. Possibly tomorrow, if I get bored enough.
I have mostly converted my page over to the new layout. I still don't know what to do with that image gallery. I've considered ditching it, although I have a decent amount of space to use and not all that much to fill it with. I was hoping an image gallery would help take up some space. A message board would be nice, especially if I could get people I know to post on it. Sadly, I am lacking the ability to add php/SQL items to my page. It's only a buck a month, but I just can't bring myself to doing it. Maybe if I find out some people would actually be interested in using it I might change my mind.
...I've majorly gone off-track. The new layout is up. Feel free to send any comments/questions/concerns my way. Anything you need to know about reaching me is on the links page.
Duties at school and elsewhere have hindered my progress on this page (including coming up with an actual purpose for it, besides being a blog). Change is on the horizon, however! This site is ready for an overhaul. I've been working on a new layout. This one will hopefully look a bit more professional and will be easier on the eyes. It's still not finished, which is why I have yet to implement it. For a preview, head over to the current test page! I still need to finish up the finer details, such as headers, horizontal rules, etc. Hopefully soon it'll be complete, though.
Sadly, it's been nearly a month. I guess battling the forces of finals, spring break, and flu germs takes up a good amount of time. Fear not, I have done a little updating to this site. I've added some actual content to the Links page, made the About Me section around a mile long, added little copyright things to every page, and accomplished ...nearly nothing with the image gallery. It looks different, but not so much in a good way. I have the darn icons set the way they should be, but the rest of the page refuses to have anything to do with them.
Feel free to take a look at the image gallery to see the mess. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. There's got to be something I'm missing in the code. Also, the thought of converting everything to the width of the image gallery had crossed my mind. Any opinions? Let me know.
EDIT: Apparently this was the first time I'd remembered to test my page in Internet Explorer. I noticed that the problem with my image gallery only occurs in Firefox, which is interesting. I fixed issues with the top of the pages in IE, so the pages will look more alike in Firefox and IE. Now if I could get the gallery to behave in Firefox the way it does in IE, I'd be in business there. I also still need to tweak margins between paragraphs/horizontal rules/etc, but that can wait.
Hopefully sooner than later I will do some more work on this site. The gallery is still in need of being finished and given a purpose, and that is probably the first thing I will work on. I am currently in the middle of finals week for the winter quarter, so some time during spring break next week I will get some work done here.
I've managed to post up the first blog on my new site. Click the little Blog link up at the top to read it.
I'm also working on doing up a gallery system for this page, so I can post up various pictures and some of my artwork on here. I'm having trouble getting it to look the way I want, however. I'd like to have three icons in each row, with the light grey background stretching down to just below the bottoms of the last row. Instead, if I get the background to work right, either all of the icons are in one column or one row. If I get them in the proper 3 columns and multiple rows (float:left does this quite easily) then the background ends above the first row, so instead the icons are sitting on a black background.
I have posted up the way it looks right now. I've taken a break from working on it for now, hoping to get some inspiration on a solution in the next few days. Click the Gallery button at the top to see what I have so far. At least the icon links with the descriptions below them and the border around them look and act exactly how I want them to. Too bad they just won't line up right.
By the way, I'll take any suggestions. My e-mail is listed on the Links page. Also, the gallery page simply has a list of links to the Artwork folder. I haven't thought of what else I want to put in the gallery, but I needed something to test the layout. Just in case you were wondering why I have a ton of copies of the same link.
Well now, apparently all one needs is a quick search on Google to find a home for a small beginner page. After a quick search, I came upon this site AXSpace which is a free web hosting service. They offer a pay service also, but the free service is just enough to start up a small page to record my thoughts, let others get in touch with me, or anything else that a small beginners web site could be used for.
It was nice to see how professional the site was, too. They didn't dumb anything down, but at the same time you can find explanations for anything you have questions about. You can also set up your page to be done all on your own. I can access my site's e-mail through Thunderbird, and upload the pages from Dreamweaver.
Also, for an idea on the speed at which I got this up, look at the first entry below. Specifically, look at the time in the first sentence. As I finish typing up this sentence, it is soon to be 1:00am.
My page is created, this entry being written at 11:02pm. Currently, however, there is no home for my page. It is simply residing on my hard drive until I can find some server to give it shelter. This entry will not even be read by another soul until that day. I mainly wanted some content on this page to have something on it to help test it.
Here's hoping that someday this page will be available to the entire world.
